
Keeping Things Warm (and Safe) with IP66 Infrared Heaters
When we build outdoor or bathroom heaters, the biggest headache isn’t just making sure they don’t short out the moment they get wet. That’s the easy part. The real trick is figuring out how to blast enough heat to keep you warm without blinding you in the process. Especially in a nursery or a steamy bathroom, you can’t have a light that feels like staring into the sun.
The “Glare” Problem
Most standard short-wave infrared lamps are aggressively bright. If you’re putting one near a baby’s crib, that’s a huge no-go. To fix this, we play around with the physics. We use specific quartz coatings and special filaments to filter out those harsh, blinding frequencies. The result? A “soft” glow. You still get all that cozy, radiating heat, but you aren’t squinting the whole time. It’s a bit of a trade-off—filtering the light changes the heat distribution slightly—but it’s a price we’re happy to pay to keep eyes safe.
Dealing with the Steam
An IP66 rating basically means the unit is dust-tight and can take a direct hit from a powerful water jet. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed cable entries to make that happen. But here’s the thing: when you seal a box that tight to keep water out, the heat has nowhere to go. It just builds up inside the chassis. You can’t just shove a high-wattage element into a sealed box and hope for the best. We have to choose materials that can expand and shrink as they heat up and cool down without cracking the seals. Because once a seal cracks, the water wins.
A Few Tips for Installation
If you’re the one wiring these in, keep an eye on your circuit. These heaters pull a lot of power the second you flip the switch. If your breakers are already pushed to the limit, they’ll probably trip. Also, do yourself a favor and use high-temp wiring. You don’t want your insulation melting against the heater casing. And one last thing: the IP66 seal keeps the electronics dry, but it doesn’t make the outside of the unit cold. These things gethot. Give them plenty of breathing room so you don’t accidentally scorch your ceiling.
