
Keeping the Heat On: How We Build Waterproof Infrared Heaters
Most outdoor heaters don’t die because they’re “old.” They die because water and grit sneak in where they don’t belong. It’s usually a slow death—a bit of moisture here, some dust there—until the electricals finally give up. We wanted to stop that. So, we built our heaters to an IP66 standard. In plain English? It means we’ve basically locked the door against dust and high-pressure water sprays. The battle against moisture We don’t just slap some glue on the edges. We use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and reinforced seals at every single joint. It keeps the circuitry dry, even when the weather gets nasty. But here’s the tricky part: humidity. If you seal a box too tight, you get condensation inside. That creates a fog on the reflector, and a cloudy reflector is a disaster—you can lose about 20% of your heat just because the mirror is foggy. To fix this, we added anti-fogging vents. They let the unit breathe, but they’re smart enough to keep the actual rain out. Handling the shock Have you ever thrown cold water on a hot pan? It warps. The same thing happens to heater glass. When a freezing rainstorm hits a glowing hot element, the thermal shock can crack the glass instantly. To stop that, we use specific quartz glass and coatings that can take the hit. We also wrapped everything in corrosion-resistant aluminum. If you’re installing these near the ocean, that’s a lifesaver—salty air eats regular metal for breakfast. A few things to keep in mind These units are tough. You can hose them down or leave them in a drizzle without a second thought. But just a heads-up: they aren’t submarines. If you mount them in a spot where water pools or they get completely submerged, they’re going to fail. One last tip on the wiring. Because the IP66 housing is so well-sealed, it traps more heat around the internal wires than a cheap, open-air heater would. Just make sure your cable jackets can handle the heat. You don’t want your insulation melting over time just because the unit is doing its job too well.
