
Keeping Things Safe When Heat Meets Water
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or any damp spot isn’t as simple as just slapping on a waterproof cover. You’ve got to deal with a tricky bit of physics: what happens when something scorching hot suddenly gets hit by a cold drop of water. That’s why we build our units to the IP44 standard. In plain English? It means we’ve sealed things up so that splashes and tiny bits of debris can’t wiggle their way into the live electrical parts.
Why “Explosion-Proof” Quartz Matters
Here is the problem with standard quartz tubes. If a cold droplet hits a surface that’s sitting at 600°C, the glass can just… snap. It’s called thermal shock, and it’s the number one reason heaters fail in shower rooms. To stop that, we use a specific kind of treated, explosion-proof quartz. It’s designed to handle those wild temperature swings without shattering. Now, the IP44 housing is great for protecting the wiring if something goes wrong, but the glass chemistry is what actually stops the break from happening in the first place. It’s your first line of defense.
The Trade-off: Instant Heat vs. Airflow
We chose short-wave infrared because it’s fast. Like, really fast. Instead of wasting time heating up all the air in the room, the heat goes straight to your skin. You feel it the second you turn it on. But there’s a catch. To get that instant warmth, those tubes get incredibly hot. If you mount the heater too close to the ceiling or put it near something that could melt or burn, you’re asking for trouble. You could end up warping the casing. Give it at least 300mm of breathing room from the ceiling so the heat doesn’t get trapped.
A Quick Tip on Installation
When you’re wiring these in, do yourself a favor and use a dedicated circuit with a GFCI. Look, the IP44 rating is a huge help, but you’re still dealing with high wattage in a humid room. Your grounding needs to be perfect. A loose ground wire basically makes that fancy explosion-proof glass pointless. Get the wiring right, and you can actually relax and enjoy the heat.
