
Why Your Infrared Heaters Actually Die (and How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever had a workshop ceiling heater give up the ghost, chances are it didn’t happen in the middle of the lamp. It happened right at the connection point. Here is the problem: when you’re cranking a high-wattage infrared lamp, that heat doesn’t just go down toward your workspace. It creeps backward, right into the lead wires. If the seal between that quartz tube and the wiring is a bit sloppy, oxygen and moisture just slide right in. That’s where the trouble starts. You get oxidation, the insulation gets brittle and snaps, and before you know it, you’ve got a dead short. The “Cheap” Trap A lot of budget heaters just use some basic glue or a loose crimp and call it a day. We do things differently. We use a glass-to-metal seal that creates a total barrier. Think of it as stopping the “breathing” effect. Every time you turn the heater on and off, the wire expands and contracts. If the seal isn’t rock solid, that movement eventually pulls the seal away from the tube. Once that happens, those wires are just taking a beating. And when the insulation burns out? Now you’ve got a safety hazard hanging over your head. Fighting the Heat Dealing with 300°C+ is just a brutal physics problem. Standard PVC or cheap silicone just can’t hack it; they’ll fail. That’s why we use high-temp fluoropolymers and reinforced sealing compounds. They keep the electricity where it belongs, even after thousands of hours of hard use. It keeps the current from leaking into the chassis, which is exactly where you don’t want it. One pro tip: keep an eye on your voltage drop across the leads. If a seal is failing, resistance goes up. That creates a hotspot right at the junction, which just speeds up the whole failure loop. One Big Warning There is a trade-off here. Because our seals are so tight, the lead-out is a bit more rigid. Please, for the love of your equipment,don’t bend these wires at sharp anglesnear the tube. I know it’s tempting to force a tight bend just to fit the heater into a tiny space, but that’s a gamble. You risk cracking the seal. Give the wires some room to breathe. If that seal stays intact, your heater will last for years. If you stress the joint? It’ll burn out, no matter how good the rest of the components are.
