
Getting Infrared Right in Your Smart Fab
If you’re putting together an Industry 4.0 fab, you’ve probably realized that the old way of heating things just doesn’t cut it anymore. You need something that actually talks to your data. In a vacuum chamber, you can’t rely on air to move heat around. That’s why we lean on infrared (IR) systems. It’s simpler: the heat goes straight from the source to the substrate. No middleman.
Speed and Smarts
Old-school resistive heaters are slow. They lag. But IR? It’s almost instant. When you hook these up to a digital control loop, you can tweak the temperature on the fly. It’s a total shift in how you handle the process. We use high-watt density lamps, which is great because you can save a ton of space without losing that aggressive temperature ramp you need. Just a heads-up: if you’re picking out gear, make sure your heaters play nice with your PLC-based PID controllers. If they don’t, you’re looking at temperature overshoot and a pile of scrapped wafers. Nobody wants that.
The Vacuum Struggle
Here is the tricky part. In a vacuum, there’s no air to cool down the lamp envelope. If you aren’t careful, the quartz tube just cooks itself from the inside out. To stop that from happening, we spend a lot of time obsessing over the lamp’s emissivity and how the chamber reflects heat. It’s a balancing act. If you cram too many watts into a tiny area without a solid heat sink, your lamps are going to burn out way faster than they should.
Making Data Actually Useful
Digitalization sounds fancy, but for us, it’s really just about predictability. The great thing about IR is that it’s linear. You put in X amount of power, you get Y amount of heat. We can map out the thermal profile across different zones, which means you know exactly how much energy every single batch is getting. But there’s a catch. High-power IR arrays are hungry. They pull a massive amount of current. Make sure your power distribution units can handle that initial surge when you flip the switch, or you’ll be spending your morning resetting tripped breakers.
