
Getting Your Heat Right in Semi-Fab
If you’ve ever worked with wafers, you know the nightmare of warping or contamination. It usually comes down to one thing: temperature control. To fix this, we use infrared (IR) bulbs paired with gold reflectors. The goal is simple—get the heat exactly where it needs to go and stop wasting energy heating up the rest of the chamber. Why gold? Most people start with aluminum, but there’s a catch. Aluminum absorbs too much energy. Gold is different. It bounces back over 98% of that infrared radiation. Instead of the heat soaking into the lamp housing, you get a tight, focused beam. It’s a win-win. You can dial down the wattage on your lamps but still hit those target temperatures on the substrate. The “Green Factory” angle We all hear about carbon neutrality, but in a fab, that really just means using fewer kilowatt-hours per wafer. When you switch to gold reflectors, you’re not just saving power at the lamp. You’re actually making life easier for your HVAC system. Less heat leaks into the cleanroom, so your climate control doesn’t have to work overtime to keep things cool. The trade-offs (The “Be Careful” part) Now, gold is amazing, but it’s a bit high-maintenance. Whatever you do,do not use abrasive cleanerson the surface. One wrong scrub and you’ve scratched the coating, which kills your reflectivity. Keep a strict cleaning schedule to stop dust from piling up. If the reflectors get dirty, your heat starts drifting, and you’ll end up with those annoying hot and cold spots across your wafer. One last thing: watch your power. Voltage spikes will eat through your filaments in no time. And when you’re wiring everything in, make sure your controllers can keep up with the speed of shortwave IR. If they’re too slow, you’ll overshoot your temperature before the system even realizes what happened.
