Most mirror heaters use shortwave infrared to fix this, and we’ve figured out a way to hook them right into your smart home setup using Zigbee or Wi-Fi. The best part? You can trigger the heat from your phone before you even step into the tub. No more waiting around for the glass to clear.
Why it feels different
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t waste time trying to heat up all the air in the room. Instead, it sends energy straight into the glass and your skin. We use quartz tubes or conductive films that get hot in seconds. When you tap that “warm-up” button on your phone, the power kicks in immediately. It’s like flipping a switch from a freezing winter morning to a spring afternoon, without having to crank up your entire house’s HVAC system.
The “Under the Hood” Stuff
To make this work without frying your electronics, you need a heavy-duty relay. These things have to handle a big burst of power the moment they turn on. Depending on where you live, we set these up for 110V or 220V. But we don’t just blast the heat 24/7. That would be dangerous. We use something called PWM or timed intervals. Basically, the controller pulses the heat so the mirror backing doesn’t get too hot and damage itself.
A few things to watch out for
It’s not all plug-and-play. High-wattage heaters pull a lot of power. If you try to put too many of these on one circuit, you’re going to trip your breaker—and nobody wants to be in the dark while naked in the bathroom. You’ve got to plan your power zones carefully.
