
Why your old bathroom heater keeps dying (and what to actually use)
Ever notice how those standard bathroom heat lamps always seem to burn out right when you need them most? It’s not just bad luck. The problem is simple: bathrooms are steamed-up nightmares for electronics. Most of those old lamp warmers aren’t actually sealed. While you’re enjoying a hot shower, water vapor is sneaking into the housing, rusting the contacts, and killing the filament. It’s a slow death by moisture. We’ve moved the seal right down to where the heating element meets the unit, so the steam stays where it belongs—in the air, not in your wiring. The “Instant Warmth” Factor Here is the cool part about shortwave infrared. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you. But air is a terrible conductor. Shortwave IR is different. It doesn’t care about the air; it goes straight for your skin and the surfaces in the room. You feel it the second you flip the switch. No waiting around. And if you have those fancy high ceilings, these are a lifesaver because the heat actually reaches you instead of disappearing halfway down. The Safety Stuff (and the one catch) To make these things truly waterproof, we use sealed quartz envelopes and heavy-duty gaskets. It keeps the live terminals dry, which means you can breathe a little easier knowing your shower isn’t a safety hazard. But, there is a trade-off. Because the housing is so tightly sealed to keep water out, the heat gets trapped inside the unit. It’s a bit of a “heat soak.” If you’re installing these, just make sure your wiring gauge can handle that extra internal heat. You don’t want your insulation breaking down over time because the box got too hot. Updating your space If you’re renovating, swapping out an old unit for one of these is usually a pretty simple drop-in job. Plus, because these infrared units are so much more efficient at delivering heat, you can often use a lower wattage and still feel just as warm.
