
Stop Your Bathroom Heater From Shorting Out
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, freezing cold tiles, and sudden blasts of heat. Most infrared heaters fail at the exact same spot—right where the electrical wire meets the heating element. A lot of cheap brands just slap some glue on there and call it a day. But glue doesn’t hold up when things get hot. It cracks, moisture sneaks in, and before you know it, your heater shorts out and stops working. The “Breathing” Problem Here is what’s actually happening. Every time your heater kicks on and off, the materials expand and shrink. It’s almost like the unit is breathing. That movement literally sucks moisture right into the seal. Standard industrial glues eventually turn brittle and carbonize under that kind of heat. Once a tiny crack forms, the copper leads start to oxidize. This creates a “hot spot” that eats away at the connection until it simply burns out. We do things differently. We use a multi-stage process—first a mechanical crimp, then a heavy-duty silicone or ceramic potting compound. It creates a tight, vacuum-like barrier. No moisture gets in, and the connection stays rock solid, no matter how many times you flip the switch. Why the Process Actually Matters You can’t just rush this on a basic assembly line. It takes a bit of patience. The torque has to be exact and the curing temperature has to be just right. If the sealant is too thin? It cracks. Too thick? It traps too much heat and melts the wire insulation. It’s a delicate balance. We make sure these seals stay flexible so they don’t “creep” or cause electrical arcing over time. One Quick Tip for Installation There is one trade-off. Because this seal is so tight, the wire is a bit more rigid. Don’t bend the wires sharply. If you kink the wire right near the seal, you might break that vacuum we worked so hard to create. Just make sure your housing has enough room for the wires to sit naturally. Give them a little breathing room, and your heater will last a whole lot longer.
